The British University System: Studying Abroad in England

University-level courses in the UK are taught in English, but few other similarities between British and American universities. Ranking in the scheduling of classes to choose a major, the British do things his way. But, hey, you&'re the one who decided to study abroad to experience something different, right? Studying in the UK offers the opportunity to experience another culture without having to absorb another language.

British students planning to attend college specializes in the beginning of an academic discipline, while in high school. Students choose their academic major, mainly in the years that are equivalent to grades 11 and 12 in the U.S. in 11 th grade, students study four or five courses and take the first round of tests, called A-levels, prior year's level advanced to second a study of three subjects. Students emerging from these two grades with the equivalent of what is considered the first year of advanced study or credit in the U.S. Therefore, in England, most titles have been completed after three years of study rather than four.

Students apply directly to university departments of a university (such as history or biology) for admission to undergraduate programs. The department takes specific university admission decisions, not a centralized intake office. For students entering a university English majors are determined during the operation and they are allowed to take courses that are only in their majors. As a candidate for a university English department where you intend to study the comments of your application and tune. In addition, we can expect to study more than two branches in most UK universities. Some universities, however, become more flexible and allows study abroad to study in various departments at the first (first or second year) level.

Because of her students before entering the UK through the university, many courses in the first year of British universities, such as second year courses at American University, particularly in languages, science and math. While visiting students, the university can give permission only to the first and second year courses. Be aware that the courses of the second year courses to match junior year in English universities in the United States often limit access to the last year (third year) courses for students with a broad background in their respective fields of study.

Learning the ropes

Their presence is expected on conferences, discussion groups and education of laboratory practice. You must understand that in England, much of your academic work left for you. Teachers often give long lists of references at the beginning of their courses, and then you decide how much you have finished reading each week. Teachers tend not to give give you specific readings for each class. What, when and how much you read for the course is entirely up to you.

Lessons can be arranged so that the professor to cover or highlight some issues, but you will, through independent reading, they are responsible for the coverage of the topic, examining the broader content of the texts are recommended reading list. Professors assume that you are constantly reading one, and thus can contribute to discussions in class and pass the exam at the end of the course. It is usually much less hand British universities, as well as in academic and personal. Students are required to independence and adult responsibilities.

Although the amount of reading is entirely up to you, you must understand that a final exam may be the only way to evaluate your progress in the race, and believe me, cramming a semester or a year worth read in two or three weeks ISN "T a very clever idea.

Making the grade

Although the courses in American universities usually offer different possibilities to improve the quality - mid-term review, final exam or paper, quizzes, and regular writing assignments - universities in England tend to focus on only a few papers or exams, which are calculated for all or most degree. Although the rate of lower quality can contribute to your overall grade, of course exam, project or paper is usually more important determinant of the degree.

British universities assign percentage grades all courses and you should contact your home university study abroad students in the IB program or host university to learn how to translate the size of your UK university the rating scale at home.

You are responsible for the same amount of work completed as a resident student. This implies exams! Do not take courses pass / fail, because the university can not go home / no category for my overall average grade (GPA). Furthermore, the definition of an approved degree may vary between home and host universities.
